Night Chunk from the poster project
Ellie Remembers his first night at camp:
Elie’s first night in the camp was the realization for him and the rest of his family that those moments that he had with his family might be his last. The first instance of when everyone started to lose hope was when “the beloved objects that we had carried with us from place to place were now left behind in the wagon and, with them, finally, our illusions. (29)”. If it wasn’t for some old man asking, “How old are you?” (30), and telling Ellie and his father to “lie about your age. (30)”, then they would be separated from each other far before than when they actually were separated. When they finally got into the barracks and received their wooden mattress and bunk position, it finally enters everybody’s mind how much sympathy they will truly get. They were treated like dogs so they worked like dogs. |
This was one of my favorite books that we read this year. I am very interested in the Holocaust, World War II, and the horrendous acts the Nazis did within the concentration camps. The symbols in the book such as fire, smoke, hunger and trees were vital to the story and the actions in the book.
