The self-evaluation of your year in eighth-grade English
This year, I have read the following major works in English class: The Old Man and the Sea, To Kill a Mockingbird, Night, and Romeo and Juliet. In addition, I have read some short selections from our To Be a Hero anthology. Of all of the major works, my favorite was Night. I have always been interested in the things that went on during the Holocaust and inside concentration camps. The book about Elie Wiesel was so interesting and intense that I finished the book in the first week we started it. Of the shorter works, my favorite was Flying into the face of the Fuhrer. This short story was about a man named Jesse Owens who, under great odds, won four gold medals during the Berlin olympics. I love a good underdog story and this one is by far the best. Also, another good underdog story is the one of Louis Zamperini.
In addition to the required reading discussed above, I read four books during the summer. My favorite summer-reading book was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand because after all Louis went through, he overcame all of it. That man fought in World War II, overcame alcoholism, performed in the olympics, and ran one of the fastest miles in the world ever. This book relates to Night, which we also read this year. Both books were taking place during WWII and they both had their man character overcoming all of the adversity that the war threw at them. They took it and they made it.
This year, we wrote more than I have before, and the piece I enjoyed working on the most was the To Kill A Mockingbird lyrics assignment because I love nothing more than music and it was fun relating something totally random to To Kill A Mockingbird. Over the eighth grade year, I feel that my writing has improved immensely. I never knew that you can get so much symbolism and foreshadowing out of a book about a man catching a fish. My grammer is now better than ever because of the chapter we did over it and I now know how to make my pieces of writing flow. But my writing was not my favorite part of this class over the year.
My favorite project has got to be the summer reading trailer You gave us the summer reading project just to be sure that first, we read a book, and second, to make sure we got the key points of the book that we choose. This was one of my favorites because I loved the book first off, and second while we were filming, we had to film in a creek near my partner’s house which was one of the funniest things we’ve ever had to do for school. Though this was my favorite project, I also thoroughly enjoyed the Old Man and the Sea presentation with the legendary queso boat.
I am so thankful for the rubrics you teachers gave me so I knew that I was doing all the projects right. If I didn’t have a rubric, I would be much more stressed about if I was doing it right and since I had a rubric, it lifted all of the stress off my shoulders. As well as rubrics, schoology was a huge help as well. It helped me remind myself all the homework I needed to do and all the membean minutes I had to do. Schoology helped me be more responsible and a better english student.
My overall impression of eighth grade english is that as long as you read the book, you can get a good grade. This class has given me a good idea of what ninth grade english will be like and I am excited for it. I just hope that the queso boat had a lasting effect on you and the class.
